MESSAGE FROM THE 19TH EMERGENCY COMMITTEE
Welcome to the TCD Law Student Colloquium, a student-led platform dedicated to advancing legal education, academic discussion, professional development, and student representation at Trinity College Dublin and beyond.
Through conferences, guest lectures, workshops, competitions, and collaborative events, we bring together students, academics, practitioners, and members of the wider legal community to explore contemporary legal issues, exchange ideas, and create opportunities for learning beyond the classroom.
However, today, the Colloquium stands for more than academic discussion. We are actively defending the continued existence of our student-led organization. We are fighting to protect students from arbitrary exercises of academic authority and to ensure that no student is silenced, threatened, or disadvantaged for exercising their rights or participating in student-led activities.
All started following an ultimatum issued by the Head of the School of Law, Professor Oran Doyle, on 3 June 2026. According to the statement issued by the Colloquium, members of the previous committee were ordered to resign from their positions by 5:00 pm on 4 June 2026, with disciplinary proceedings against students who did not obey. For further information, please see our official statement on Instagram and the statement from our Chairman.
As a result, the previous committee members resigned while facing the threat of disciplinary consequences.
In response, the 19th Emergency Committee of the TCD Law Student Colloquium was established. Since then, the Committee has continued to work not only to preserve the existence of the Colloquium but also to stand against arbitrary exercises of authority and to defend students’ rights to organise, participate, speak openly, and engage in student-led academic activities without fear of retaliation or unjustified consequences.
Our position is clear: student-led organisations must remain spaces where students can contribute, organise, debate, and represent their peers without being subjected to arbitrary interference or intimidation. We will continue to defend these principles and the continued existence of the Colloquium as an independent student-led platform.
The circumstances surrounding the events of June 2026 remain contested and are subject to ongoing processes.
The TCD Law Student Colloquium has existed to provide students with a space to organize, debate, collaborate, and engage with the legal profession. We believe that student-led academic initiatives are an important part of university life and that students should have a meaningful voice in the organizations they build and participate in.
We are therefore continuing our work, not only to organize events and support legal education, but also to defend the future of the Colloquium and the principle of student participation.
We remain committed to academic excellence, open dialogue, transparency, and constructive engagement with the Trinity community.
Thank you to everyone who has supported the Colloquium during this difficult period.
